  • Editorial: Hunger for justice

The condition of six of these prisoners is said to be serious, and another two, who have refused food for 77 days, are said to be close to death. The mass hunger strike and the global media attention it has received have given a fillip to the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom. It has profound implications for not only the peace process, but even to Israel. It has driven deep holes in the Jewish state’s pride about its legal system and the rule of…
  • Editorial:Reining in banks

    12 May 2012 | 8:48 pm
Even at the heights of various financial crises, the advocates of free market and bankers had successfully withstood calls from various quarters for strict regulation of banks and financial institutions to stop them from playing recklessly with public money. Those calls are back with a virulence again after America’s biggest bank JP Morgan Chase made a stunning admission that it had lost billions (approximately $2bn) thanks to positions taken by a trading desk on which one of the stars, Bruno Iksil, was nicknamed the London Whale for his bullish trading. Such was the impact of the…
  • Editorial: Greek trouble

    11 May 2012 | 9:01 pm
Greece is hurtling towards an unprecedented political crisis too. The country remained mired in political stalemate yesterday as talks on forming a coalition government faltered after inconclusive polls boosted anti-austerity parties and rattled the eurozone. The media, experts and political parties are now engaged in an intense debate on the way forward, and though there is a shortage of clear answers, one thing is clear: Greeks are unwilling to buy the tough austerity measures prescribed for them by their European doctors, especially German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and are ready for a…
  • Editorial: Anti-austerity vote

    10 May 2012 | 8:24 pm
Experts and analysts have long warned against treating economic crisis and debt with austerity cuts. Cuts deepen economic wounds which actually need to be cured. Instead of stimulating growth and keeping the jobs, austerity measures stifle growth and result in job losses, pushing crisis-hit countries deeper into recession. The medicine prescribed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the economically sick countries of the continent has been a strict dose of austerity and such has been the anger of people in distressed economies that they are categorically rejecting the medicine. Elections and…
  • What after Annan peace plan?

    9 May 2012 | 8:06 pm
Khalid Al SayedEDITOR-IN-CHIEF It’s almost a month since President Bashar Al Assad’s regime  begrudgingly agreed to UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s 6-point peace plan. Yet violence still continues to rock Syria, with two bomb blasts hitting Damascus and Aleppo this week while reports of Syrian army’s assault on various rebel strongholds is daily news. The latest army actions raise doubts as to whether the bloody 14-month uprising can be resolved through diplomacy at all. Assad’s regime continues to show its blatant disregard for the peace plan by not complying with even the basic…

  • Far right ideas abound in Europe

    Sebastian TK
    1 May 2012 | 4:17 pm
We should recognise that the rise of the extreme right trend in Europe was not in response to Christian fundamentalism and its demands to play a greater role, or to Judaism and its support to Zionist settlement projects even when they were against Western interests, or to the so-called yellow and red danger in the East and South Asia and its religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism. It has come in response to future fears and concerns in the light of the growing presence of Islamic, Arab and Gulf populations in European communities. The Iranian President paid a provocative visit to the island of Abu Musa occupied by Iran since 1971. The 20 sqm island is located 60km from the city of Sharjah. Arab states immediately condemned the visit and the GCC states sent a message of protest to the United Nations condemning the visit as “a blatant violation of the principles of the UN Charter and international law and flagrant violation of the sovereignty of an Arab state. The message accused the visit of disregarding all peace initiatives and efforts made by the UAE and other GCC countries in order to find a just and lasting…
  • Transparency needed in companies

    Sebastian TK
    17 Apr 2012 | 6:03 pm
Transparency is one of the terms repeated nowadays in various mass media and many personalities, institutions and countries still use it randomly without knowing its true meaning based on clarity, honesty and truth! Six years ago or more the annual profits for the Qatari listed firms were lucrative and unexpected in favour of shareholders. But with the outbreak of the recent global financial crisis the distribution of these profits dropped and the monopoly of profits by some and not all boards of directors based on bad intentions were unveiled. (1) Global crisis and profits of stock market…

    17 Apr 2012 | 5:59 pm
The split in views on the situation in Syria is expanding rather than unifying. Despite the clear position of Saudi Arabia and Qatar condemning the Syrian regime and their call to support and arm the opposition, some Arab and GCC countries led by Iraq support the situation in Syria and ignore the daily scene of murder and destruction. (1)    The situation in Syria is further becoming complex and hard to find acceptable settlements. Neither the international stands including the recent mission led by Kofi Annan the joint UN envoy, nor the movements and initiatives led by the mission of the…

The Statements of Dubai’s police chief accusing the Muslim Brotherhood of conspiring against the Gulf States in order to access to power saying they will start by dominating Kuwait in 2013 and other Gulf States in 2016, had raised many reactions in the political, media and public circles. These statements have marked the beginning of an open confrontation where the political movements that carry religious trends in their programmes and agenda (like Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi trend) have come to power in countries where the repressive regimes were changed and controlled the legislative…
